Five year old grey gelding Banksdale (AUS) (race favorite) broke down badly at the 450m mark, and was restrained out of the race. His off hind cannon was badly fractured, and as a result he was euthanased on track, 21st March 2009. Three year old Happy Wanderer (AUS) also broke down and suffered the same fate only a few races earlier (see below).
