Special mention today to the lovely, honest horse 'Sunburnt Land (AUS) who was tragically struck by lightning last night in his paddock in outer Melbourne and died. The Scenic (IRE) 5 year old gelding earned almost $380,000 in his brief career, highlighted by a win in the Gr 2 Caulfield Sprint only 1 month ago.

Sunburnt Land (AUS) had been sent for a short spell after finishing third to Swick in last Saturday's Group One Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) at Flemington. At his previous start he finished a luckless third to Hot Danish in the Salinger Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day.

A Group 1 win was not far away for this luckless galloper, however it was not to be with the tragic news this morning. I for one will miss this emerging galloper.

Queensland topliner Blood 'n' Bone reportedly broke down at Eagle Farm on the weekend, Saturday the 8th of November, 2008. He suffered a fractured near fore sesamoid, but his status is unknown.

This group of owners may well remember the first Tuesday in November (2008) quite differently to others.

Six year old gelding The Darkcee (AUS) raced erratically and hung out badly coming around the home turn, he collided with the running rail and suffered severe injuries. He was euthanased on track, Ipswich 5th of November, 2008.

Disturbingly, this is not the first time a horse has suffered serious injuries in this manner at Ipswick Racetrack. There has already been at least one other similar incident in the past few months, which has lead to many trainer/jockeys/owners questioning the safety of this tight track.

Come on Strop - any news?

I was saddened to hear today that 5 year old Bite the Bullet gelding 'Come On Strop' was pulled up at Canberrra last Friday 19/9 with a severe tendon injury. He was treated on course and vanned to a nearby clinic for further assessment.
I used to work with the dam of this boy, Cardsino and she was such a lovely mare, I have followed her progeny closely.
If anyone has any information as to his status, I'd really love to know.

RIP Juste Momente

Like to make a mention of a great mare, Group one winning Juste Momente who died earlier this month after a bout of colic. The five year old grey won the Robert Sangster Stakes Group I, and earned over half a million in prize money.

The only Group 1 winner by Giant's Causeway in Australia, Juste Momente was one of the most valuable mares in the country and was set to make her stud debut this year.

Notable mention to the passing of one of our great racehorses in Filante, who died on Sunday 17th of August at the age of 16 at Ilala Stud at Scone. More recently known as a sire, Filante captured hearts on the racetrack with a string of Group wins many in record times.

Recent Adelaide River Cup winner Barabba Sun (AUS) broke down in the early stages of the 2008 Darwin Cup, and was eased out of the race. He suffered a serious leg injury and was euthanased on track, 4th of August, 2008. His stablemate, Liquid Asset went on to win the race.
